Introduction to Mahabharat Characters - Somadatta

Somadatta

He is the son of Bahlika (elder brother of King Shantanu of Hastinapur)and father of Bhurishravas. He is the root cause of trouble between Vrishni clan and his clan.

Devaki was the sister of Kamsa and mother of Krishna. Kamsa was very fond of his sister and arranged for swayamvaram where he invited neighboring princes to take participate. Somadatta was the prince of Bahlika Kingdom who had come to take part in the swayamvaram. Vasudeva was a good friend of Kamsa and he was very much in love with Devaki. Somadatta was also keen on marrying her. A skirmish broke out between Somadatta and Vasudeva. Vasudeva friend, Sini of Vrishni clan of Yadavas fought with Somadatta. Somadatta loses out to shini and this leads to a grudge held by both the clans.
